No doubt you also have wondered how some people can do activities which seem totally boring to you. I am reminded of two people who were engaged in activities that to me seemed utterly mind numbing. I was curious as to what kept them contentedly engaged.
One was a woman who worked in a textile factory making button holes for mens' suits. I asked her what kept her engaged in what she was doing. She told me that it was easy. At first the challenge came from learning to do the task. Once she had truly mastered it she enjoyed having the luxury of time to herself. Her mind would be engaged in creating stories, reciting poetry, thinking about books she was reading etc. With her lack of formal education she felt she did not have opportunities for other work but she was happy to have found a way to make her day interesting.
The other was my daughter. She was an avid figure skater and would spend hours practicing figure eights. To me the activity of going round and round creating the figure eight seemed utterly boring. When I asked her how she could keep doing the same thing over and over she was surprised by my question. She described that what she was doing was actually very challenging. She constantly was paying attention to the angle of the blades and perfecting the figure eight. Her mind was actively engaged in a task that required full involvement in order to progress.
For both of these people in these examples it was the total engagement in the activity which gave them the desire to keep doing what they were doing. From these examples we can draw the following conclusions:
1. We have choices in how we experience what we do. It is our mental attitude which makes the difference.
2. Set yourself clear manageable challenges in what you do.
3. It is the act of being mindfully engaged in life which brings happiness.
4. To create more happiness for yourself find ways to be more mindfully present in your daily tasks and relationships.
5. Manage time in a way that you are spending it on things and people that are important to you
