Don't Go It Alone

Right now there are a ton of teachers out there to help our kids learn new skills. They range from piano lessons, to tutoring, to second languages. There is an entire subset of business that focuses and caters exclusively to children. I think it's great for our kids to learn new skills and to experience things they otherwise would not.

I do think that it is very interesting that we will sign our kids up for programs in which they will learn a new skill or to improve upon a skill they already have, but as adults, many of us will not do the same for ourselves.

I will forever consider myself a 'student', and I seek to learn as many new things as I can, every second of the day. I know there is not enough time in life for me to learn all that I want, but I am going to try my hardest to cram it all in.

During this time of year, my wife and I sit down together to not only discuss our current, one year, and five year goals, but to write them down and plan how we will make them happen. As part of my continual learning process, one of my goals for next year is to attend at least 8 seminars or programs where I expect to gleam at least one piece of information to help improve my life or my business.

Many of us would balk at the idea of attending a marriage seminar and investing $200 for a day of learning. I argue with those same people that investing $200 in my marriage is a small price to pay for happiness.

What about business and careers? Would you invest $1,800 for the opportunity to spend a few hours on a long distance phone call to learn something that you help you improve your business or move into a career you dream about? Career Coach Dan Miller did just that a few years ago. He wanted to branch out his business into teaching tele-seminars, so he paid $1,800 to listen to a phone call from the most knowledgeable instructor in the business. While most people advised him not to do it because of the price, Dan did not listen to them. Instead, he invested $1,800 and during his first tele-seminar, made over $18,000! Add to that the related MP3 and other sales, and he has more than repaid his original investment.

I do find it very interesting that if we get a scrape on our arm or a bad cold we visit the doctor, but most of us that have marriage or money problems will not seek the advice of a professional. If you want to improve your life, do not ever let the learning stop. Seek out information, and meet your potential!
