There is something very special and wonderful in stories that are considered spiritual in nature, and this is due to the way that they all show the magnificence of the spirit. You may note that I have not said "human" spirit and this is a deliberate omission. "Spirit" is that part of all creation that is the least understood and yet is the most admired, and humans do not hold the patent on this conceptualized term. Animals and their unselfish actions have been at the heart of many spiritual stories as well.
When people hear a story of how someone or something conquered and triumphed over overwhelming odds, it touches that purest center of their own indomitable inner spirit. This connection can be over even small triumphs, as the size of the battle is not important. The important aspect that makes us connect with stories and moments that are awe inspiring is the manner and character of the spiritual triumph itself.
This is seen when an animal or a human shows its best nature, not for a reward or a compliment, but because the action is unselfish and the right and good response. Doing the right thing is a spiritual connection that can be felt by almost everyone and it is this "right thing" that is recognized and enjoyed by us all when we are listening to those tales that have some spiritual meaning.
You do not have to tie any of these stories with organized religion or even with any culture or class or caste. These inspirational and uplifting tales have the ability to touch all with their light and innate goodness that is automatically recognized and felt by that inner awareness that we all share. When you see someone who is willing to sacrifice whatever they can for a good cause and neither expects nor desires anything in return, this nourishes our own inner awareness and consciousness.
